The global symbol of kindness, connection, and aloha is taking center stage in the award-winning documentary Shaka: A Story of Aloha, recently featured on KHON2 Living808.

Produced and written by Hawaiʻi filmmaker Steve Sue, the film explores the deeper meaning behind the Shaka — a simple gesture recognized worldwide, yet rooted deeply in the values of compassion, respect, and community. What began as research for a brand concept evolved into a five-year journey of storytelling, sparked by a pivotal conversation with Aunty Kela in Lā‘ie.

Despite production challenges during the pandemic, the film emerged stronger, weaving together voices, history, and heart from Hawaiʻi and beyond. Its impact has already been recognized with the 2024 Hawaiʻi International Film Festival People’s Choice Award for Best Feature Documentary, a Spotlight Gold Award, and selections at six major film festivals.

Beyond awards, the film carries a mission. Through his nonprofit ID8, Sue hopes the project encourages people everywhere to live with more compassion and respect.

“The Shaka represents Aloha — and the Aloha Spirit is something the world truly needs right now.”

Shaka: A Story of Aloha begins streaming worldwide on January 16, 2026, available on Apple TV, Amazon Prime, Fandango at Home, and other major platforms.
