Shaka, the Power of Aloha began its quest in La’ie, on the island of Oahu, Hawai’i. If you ever wonder if the story of Hamana Kalili is real, check out the Polynesian Cultural Center in La’ie. At the entry gate stands an 8’+ statue of Tutu Hamana. There’s also a plaque commemorating the statue and telling at least part of the story of the Shaka. While the story has many versions, no one disputes that Tutu Hamana lost his fingers in an accident and no one disputes his abilities, virtues and values.
Each day on this project we learn a little bit more. From searching archives, to interviewing Kupuna, to online searches, we are dedicated to revealing the truths about the origin and meanings of the Shaka. Stay tuned!
